1   Installing Advanced Services Engine


 Stop! 
Risk of personal injury. Do not attempt to access any component inside the chassis; no user-serviceable components exist inside it. Mechanical and electrical shock hazards are present throughout the system. Only qualified personnel are allowed to install and service the system and its components.

The Advanced Services Engine (ASE) card enables additional services to be added to traffic flows that are beyond current PPA-based hardware and software. For flows to have these services added, the ingress PPA (iPPA) forwards them to an Application Services Processor (ASP). The ASP applies additional services to packets of the flow and forwards them to the egress PPA (ePPA). Two ASPs reside on the ASE card.

 Caution! 
Risk of personal injury or damage to critical part. The ASE card is heavier than similar line cards because of the extensive use of heat sinks.

You need a #1 Phillips screwdriver to loosen and tighten the screws that secure the card in the chassis.

To add an ASE card to a system:

  1. Select the slot for the card; see Table 3.

     Caution! 
    Risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Always use an ESD wrist or ankle strap when handling the card. Avoid touching the printed circuit board, components, or any connector pins on the card.
  2. Put on an antistatic wrist strap and attach it to an appropriate grounded surface. Do not attach the wrist strap to a painted surface; an ESD convenience jack is located on the front of the chassis.
  3. Loosen the captive screws and remove the current or blank card that is installed in the slot for the card.
  4. Install the card:
    1. Align the new card with the card guides; these guides are located at the left and right sides of the slot in a SmartEdge 400 or 600 chassis ( Figure 1 or at the top and bottom of the slot in a SmartEdge 800 or 1200 chassis ( Figure 2).
    2. Position the ejector levers away from the front panel and then carefully slide the card into the slot. The ejector levers rotate as the latching mechanisms engage the walls of the slot and the connectors on the card are inserted into the connectors on the backplane.

       Stop! 
      Risk of equipment damage. If you feel any resistance (the card does not slide smoothly without effort) or hear the card touching the components on the card installed in the adjacent slot, do not force the card into the slot.

      Because of the high density and compact design of the SmartEdge router, the underside of the card might rub against the electromagnetic interference (EMI) gasket of the adjacent card during card insertion and potentially damage the card. To reduce this risk, ensure that the card is perfectly perpendicular to the slot. If you feel any resistance, slightly shift the front panel until it can slide easily into the slot.

    3. Push on the ejector levers until they are parallel with the front panel; this action fully seats the connectors with the backplane.
    4. Secure the card in the chassis by tightening the screws on the front panel. Then with the Phillips screwdriver, tighten each screw to a maximum torque of 5.0 inch-lbs (0.6 Newton-meters).
  1. After the card has been installed, verify its operational status as described in the hardware guide for your chassis.
