1   Introduction

This guide describes the SmartEdge® log messages, including the UID, the message text, a description, the severity of the problem, the arguments, the message an entry replaces, and the recommended action to resolve the problem.

The log messages have the following format:

timestamp: %facility-severity-UID:text.

For definitions of the message components, see Table 1.

Table 1    Log Message Components

Log Message Component

Description

timestamp

Time the logged event occurred

facility

SmartEdge module that triggered the message

severity

The level of severity (see Table 2)

UID

Unique ID for the message

text

Text of the log message

SmartEdge OS log messages from severity 0 to 5 are documented in this guide; for descriptions of the severity levels, see Table 2.

Table 2    Log Message Severity Levels

Severity

Name

Description

0

LOG_EMERG

The system is unusable

1

LOG_ALERT

Immediate administrator intervention is required

2

LOG_CRIT

A critical condition has been detected

3

LOG_ERR

An error condition has occurred

4

LOG_WARNING

A potential problem exists

5

LOG_NOTICE

Normal but significant events or conditions exist

Table 3 defines the components of a log message description.

Table 3    Log Message Description Components

Topic

Definition

Message

Log message text.

The percent symbol, followed by lower-case letters (%s, %d) represents variable strings in the log message, such as the name of the operation that was running at the time of the event, PVC information, profile names, or error codes. For definitions, see the Arg topics.

Description

Description of the problem that triggered the log message, with suggestions about the cause.

Severity

Log message severity level.

Action

Suggested steps to resolve the problem.

Arg 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6

Argument definitions in the order in which they appear in the message. For example, Arg #1 appears first, Arg #2, second in the message string.

Replaces

Log message events that this event replaces.
