This document describes how to configure all types of SmartEdge traffic cards and services cards in the SmartEdge 100, 400, 600, 800, 1200, and 1200H chassis and provides information about the capabilities of these cards. This document also describes setting up and using the SmartEdge 100 media interface cards (MICs) and native ports.
Traffic cards and MICs are the individual I/O cards in a SmartEdge chassis. A SmartEdge chassis supports many different types of traffic cards, and configuration and operations tasks for each card can vary.
The procedures described in this document are common to all card types, except where noted.
The term first generation refers to traffic cards equipped with the first-generation Packet Processing ASIC (PPA1). The term second generation refers to traffic cards equipped with the second-generation PPA2.
Table 1 lists SmartEdge 100 controller card and the MICs that are supported on the SmartEdge 100 router. In addition to these MICs, the SmartEdge 100 also includes two native GE ports that support either 1000Base-T or 1000Base-FX.

(1) This card is referred to as a PPA2-based traffic
card.
(2) The SmartEdge 600,
1200, and 1200H routers do not support PPA1-based traffic cards.
(3) This card is referred to as a PPA3-based traffic card.
Traffic cards and media interface cards (MICs) are the individual I/O cards in a SmartEdge chassis; ports are the physical interfaces on the SmartEdge traffic cards and MICs, and a channel is a logical subdivision of the bandwidth of a channelized port on a traffic card. The SmartEdge 400 and SmartEdge 800 routers support many different types of traffic cards, ports, and channels. The SmartEdge 100 router supports Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet (GE) ports and MICs:
The actual range of available ports depends on the MIC installed in the MIC slot.
The term controller carrier card refers to the controller functions on the circuit board within the SmartEdge 100 chassis; these functions are compatible with the XCRP3 Controller card. The term I/O carrier card refers to the traffic card functions on the circuit board; these functions are compatible with the similar functions that are implemented on all SmartEdge traffic cards.
The term chassis refers to any SmartEdge chassis; the term SmartEdge 800 refers to any version of the SmartEdge 800 chassis; the term SmartEdge 800s refers only to the SmartEdge 800s chassis.
The term traffic card refers to either a SmartEdge 100 media interface card (MIC) or a SmartEdge 400 or SmartEdge 800 traffic card, unless otherwise noted.
